Inspiring Excellence

‘a GOOD school with Outstanding features’

Our aim is for students to gain an enthusiasm for and an understanding of Geography and its applications appropriate to a continually evolving and diverse society. Whilst studying Geography at Coombeshead students will look at the world around them at various scales from the local to the global. The intension is for our students to gain an appreciation of how our world works and how we are connected to that world. Our priority is to make the learning in Geography as interesting and relevant as possible, whilst also making it fun!

Geography is taught to all students from Year 7 to Year 8 and as part of a Humanities choice at GCSE. All courses cover the Programmes of Study as laid out in the Geography National Curriculum, but scope is provided to enable staff to display their own skills, interests and individual teaching styles within the broad framework of the schemes of work.

Key Stage 3 (Years 7 & 8)

During years 7 & 8 students cover a variety of topics including Our Country, Forest Fires, Oceans, Crime, Japan, Food, Microclimate, Renewable energy, Rainforests and Urban Deprivation. There is a big emphasis on developing skills which will help in the future. Students are taught in sets (used in History and B&V as well) according to their ability from the start of Year 7.

Key Stage 4 (Years 9, 10 & 11)

Students are currently following the OCR B Syllabus. It involves studying the topics of ’Rivers & Coasts’, ‘Population & Settlement’, ‘Economic Development’ and ‘Hazards’. The course is designed to give students a broad experience of the subject. Students will sit two examinations, one based on knowledge and understanding of the course content and the other designed to test the students’ ability to make decisions based on a real life geographical issue. The final requirement of the course is to complete a controlled assessment based on students collecting information through field work and writing it up as a report.

Students are expected to go on trips to learn and develop the skills of fieldwork. Currently we run trips to Dartmoor, Slapton Sands, Exeter, Bristol and we do run an optional residential to London.

Key Stage 5 (Years 12 & 13)

For those students wishing to continue studying the Geography Post-16 we currently offer AS and A2 Level qualifications.
