Our three core aims are: to enthuse students about English as a subject, to enable all our students to communicate effectively in both the written and spoken word and to ensure all students are successful at GCSE and beyond.
Key Stage 3 (Years 7 & 8)
Our Key Stage 3 programme of study has been developed in line with the National Curriculum and is designed to develop literacy skills as well as promoting the belief that all of our students can achieve success in English. This is achieved by a planning approach which encourages interactive lessons and dynamic teaching. To ensure students are prepared for the demands of GCSE English, the KS3 programme draws down from the structure and objectives of GCSE English and Literature.
Students are taught in ability groups and are regularly assessed to ensure that our teaching meets their specific learning requirements. Progress levels are checked at regular intervals to ensure literacy support can be offered when necessary. We offer a wide range of support programmes to ensure that all of our students’ learning needs are addressed. In addition, classes have a weekly library-based literacy session in which students have the chance to read with teachers on a one-to-one basis and focus on improving their literacy skills. This has a proven record in developing literacy skills.
It is a major focus of our team that students make full use of their reading skills for both learning and enjoyment. Our Accelerated Reader programme encourages students to read for enjoyment by guiding their book choices to ensure that students select books which are both challenging and entertaining. Students enjoy reading their chosen book and then taking part in quizzes which test their understanding. The quiz results then encourage the student to make their next selection more challenging. Accelerated Reader has played a huge role in improving student literacy levels and encouraged many students to read for enjoyment. In the first year of AR, Year 7 read and quizzed on over 8,000 books!
For any AR questions or concerns please do not hesitate to contact our Literacy co-ordinator Miss Harriet Turner

Key Stage 4 (Years 9, 10 & 11)
Key Stage 4 students are set by ability and study both GCSE English Language and GCSE English Literature. As with KS3, the planning and delivery of lessons is driven by the needs of our learners and our determination that every student achieves his or her potential.
The popularity and success of English is reflected in the success of our Key Stage 5 courses. Our A-Level options include English Literature, English Language and Literature (combined) and Media Studies. We aim to offer students a diverse and popular route into Further Education.
We encourage students to explore and develop their creative skills by participating in a wide range of creative writing competitions and after college clubs. These events provide students with the opportunity to explore English in a variety of new and exciting ways.
Both our Film Club and Creative Writing Club have helped students produce some fantastic work over the last two years and we arrange regular theatre and cinema trips to allow students to explore live-action texts whenever possible. In recent years we have arranged trips to experience a diverse range of texts including An Inspector Calls, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, King Lear, and Matilda among others. This encourages students to experience English beyond the class-room environment.
One of our most innovative projects has been the introduction of ‘theme days’ to celebrate national events such as National Poetry Day, World Book Day and Roald Dahl Day. We also work with local schools to hold regular workshops with visiting authors every term. As a team we feel that the exciting and inspirational effects of these events will play a huge role in raising student aspiration.
Key Stage 5 (Years 12 & 13)
Beyond GCSE we build on a love of language and literature by offering A-levels in English literature and English literature/language.
